Imam Nawawi (d.676H) said“Scholars have compiled forty hadith on the foundations of the religion, some on the subsidiary matters, some on jihad, some on abstinence, some on etiquettes and others on sermons. All of these are righteous aims – may Allah be pleased with those who pursued them.
However, I considered it best to compile forty hadith, which are more important that that, as these forty hadith incorporate all of these [individual] subjects. The scholars described these hadith as being the axis of Islam, half of Islam,or a third of it, and so forth.

The text of this treatise is a translation of “The Book Of Fasting” from the book “al-Fiqh al-Muyassar.”
Shaykh Ṣāliḥ Āl al-Shaykh said about this book in his introduction:
“This book comprises of Fiqh rulings pertaining to the acts of worship and dealings, along with their evidences from the noble Book and the authentic Prophetic Sunnah.”
He also stated:
“Its wording is clear and its style is simple, so that the students of knowledge can benefit from it and other than them from the general Muslims.
The precision of its categorization and the ease in benefiting from its subject matter, and this is achieved through the headings, which indicate the content and aid to understand it.”
These are some of the reasons we decided to translate this book for the English reader, may Allāh allow us and you to benefit from it.
We have added some questions at the end of each chapter to enable the student to test their understanding.

The Mufti Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azīz Āl ash-Shaykh:
Causing corruption in the land by way of highway robbery, terrorizing the people, bombings, explosions, or hijacking planes, ships, and trains are from the major sins. The recompense for one who commits this crime is that he is either executed, imprisoned, or his limbs are cut off on opposite sides. Then, a more severe punishment will come from Allāh on the Day of judgment.
